If you have purchased branded mouse such as Microsoft, Logitech or gaming mouse such as Razer that comes 5 buttons or more, most of the time it will come with a driver and software that lets you customize what the extra mouse button can do. If for some reason you do not like to use the mouse software provided by the manufacturer, you can try using X-Mouse Button Control to remap your mouse buttons and the scroll wheel as well.
X-Mouse Button Control is probably the most advanced software to customize your mouse. It can allow you to provide mouse button settings based on specific application, and there are 5 layers which is actually like profiles. The settings based on application is useful for gamers if they want to map certain actions on a button but don’t want to reflect on Windows. You can also map media players so that the mouse button can play, pause, stop, next track and etc.
Another advanced features we noticed is the simulation of keystrokes. Meaning that you can press a button on your mouse and it automatically does a few things based on what you programmed. If you want to temporarily disable X-Mouse from mapping your mouse actions by going to the Settings window and enable the Bypass ALL actions when SCROLL LOCK is ON.
X-Mouse Button Control is free and is compatible with Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008/7 both 32 and 64 bit.
