Show All Duplicate Same Printer Types in Windows 7

March 27, 2010 | Filed under Printing, Windows 7

In Windows XP, installing any printers even with the same type will list it in the Printers and Faxes window. However in Windows 7, Microsoft has changed it a bit by merging those with same printer types into one and to see the properties window from one of the printer, you will have to right click on it, go to Printer Properties and there it will list the printers.

In a corporate environment normally you will order a few of the same types of printers and even if you connect the printers and name them differently, they will be merged into one as long as it is the same printer type. This feature is by design to make the printer list tidier but if you are not used to it and wants the good old Windows XP method that shows all printers, then you can get it back by adding the following registry entry.

1. Go to Start and type regedit in the search programs and files bar, and hit enter.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace
3. Right click on the NameSpace at the left pane and select New > Key.
4. Name the key as {2227a280-3aea-1069-a2de-08002b30309d}
5. Go to Control Panel in “Small icons” view and you will see a new “Printers” icon. This is where you will find all your printers listed individually even if they are the same type.

Do note that this does not change or modify the Devices and Printers view. It only adds an extra place for you to view your printers.
