Right Click Context Menu to Copy Full File Path

April 15, 2010

Windows right click context menu are very useful because it contains commands that are frequently used such as copy, cut, paste, delete, rename, creating new files and folders, etc. However it lacks of command to allow the user to copy the full path of the file. For example the file is located deep into many folders at your hard drive and one way to copy the full path without typing it is by first copying the path from the address bar and then append the filename to it making it a full file path.

If you are frequently dealing with copying of filename together with its full path, you can use CopyPathMenu to simplify the process. After installing CopyPathMenu, whenever you right click on any file or folder, you have an extra menu selection that is “Copy as path” and then you can select either Copy filename(s) or Copy as email link.

Copy Path Menu

The good thing about this is it can copy the path for multiple files to the clipboard. When you paste it to a text file, it will paste every path at a new line. In the Options window, you can specify whether to copy the filenames as original path, as URI, old DOS 8.3 style or C/C++ syntax. If you don’t want to path but just the filenames, you can check the “Only filename without path”.

CopyPathMenu is free and works on Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, Windows 7.

Change Google Chrome New Tab to Blank Page

April 15, 2010

Google Chrome can be considered a fresh web browser which still lacks of some features. One of it is the ability to change the new tab page to something else. For now, whenever you open a new tab, Google Chrome preloads it with the eight most visited sites which is in image squares or thumbnails on the top and also recently closed windows and tabs as links at the bottom.

This can pose as a privacy risk issue because a person that borrows your computer for a while to check their web mail could end up seeing what websites you always visit. You can remove the websites that is listed in new tab by clearing the histories but that would cause inconvenience by always have to type the full URL.

Until the development team of Google Chrome comes out with an option to change the new tab page, you can use the extension called Blank New Tab. After installing this extension, every time you open a new tab will show a blank page (chrome://newtab/) and not the thumbnails of top visited websites and recently closed tabs. Blank New Tab extension is very small and it worked perfectly on Chrome.

IE and Firefox Caret Browsing Disables Scrolling using Keyboard Arrow Keys

April 15, 2010

If you are Firefox or Internet Explorer user, you might have missed out a feature called Caret Browsing. The default key for both IE and Firefox to activate Caret Browsing mode is F7. Basically when you activated the Caret Browsing, this feature places a movable cursor in web pages, allowing you to select text with the keyboard. For people who are not careful with what they click, normally they would simply click the Yes button without reading the information displayed first.

When Caret Browsing mode is turned on, the user can no longer use the arrow keys on their keyboard to scroll the browser up, down, left and right. Instead, the cursor is now on the text like as though you are editing the text on your browser. No, you cannot edit the text on a website with Caret Browsing as it only allows you to select the text by pressing and holding the SHIFT key and moving to the left or right with your arrow key.

If you find yourself always hitting the F7 key and accidentally enabled the Caret Browsing mode, you can easily disable the F7 Caret Browsing activation. For Firefox, type about:config at the address bar and hit enter. At the filter bar, search for the word caret, double click on accessibility.browsewithcaret_shortcut.enabled to change the value to false. That will disable the F7 key from activating Caret Browsing mode. As for disable Internet Explorer Caret Browsing F7 key, we found a group policy restriction but unfortunately disabling it from there does block the F7 from activation Care Browsing.

Download Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Web or Standalone Installer

April 15, 2010

More and more software are coded in C# which in turns requires the user to have Microsoft .NET Framework installed to run the application. The reason why C# is gaining a lot of popularity it has many available libraries and coding a function is 10 times faster and easier if compared to C++. Microsoft Windows Vista and 7 operating system already by default comes with .NET Framework 3 which allows users to run many applications written in C#.

Recently Microsoft has released the final stable version of .NET Framework 4 which contains a lot of new and improved features. We won’t be posting the .NET Framework 4 changelog because it is for application developers and not end users. What everyone including the end user should know is the .NET Framework 4 works side by side with older Framework versions. Applications that are based on earlier versions of the Framework will continue to run on the version targeted by default.

The latest Microsoft .NET Framework 4 is not available in Windows Update yet but you can get it from the link below. There is a web installer where you can download a small setup file and it only downloads the necessary files to install. Another one is the standalone version of the .NET Framework 4 installer which is slightly bigger in size and it can be installed on computers without an active internet connection.
