How to Pin Folder or Directory to Windows 7 Taskbar

March 12, 2010 | Filed under Windows 7

Windows 7 has a new feature where it allows users to pin their favorite programs to the taskbar. This pinning is meant to replace the old Quick Launch toolbar and many Windows 7 users agrees that the Pin feature is way better than the Quick Launch toolbar. As useful as it is, you might have noticed that it is only possible to pin a program, shortcut and file to the Taskbar. What if you have a few folders which you normally access and work on? Try right clicking on a folder or directory and the Pin to Taskbar menu does not appear on the list.

Not to worry because there is a workaround on how to pin folders to taskbar in Windows 7 which doesn’t require any extra software to do it. First pin any programs such that you don’t want to pin such as the Windows Calculator. Once you’ve done that, you will need the full path of the folder that you would like to pin. If you don’t know where to find it, navigate to the folder and open it. Now press CTRL+D and then followed by CTRL+C.

This part is the most important of all. Right click at the pinned Calculator and you will see Calculator and Unpin this program from taskbar. Again right click on Calculator and select Properties.

pin folder in Windows 7

The target box should be highlighted. Now press CTRL+V to paste the path of the folder that you’ve copied just now. Click OK to close the Properties window.

Now try clicking on the pinned calculator and the folder opens instead of calculator!

I hate to say this, but there is a much more elegant way to do this at:

Look for the piece about creating a shortcut, and then adding the word “explorer” before the path.

Incidentally, I just did this with a network drive location – worked flawlessly.

No I don’t work for them.
