How to Flip or Rotate Video While Watching with VLC Media Player

April 13, 2010 | Filed under Software, Video

We have covered a method on how to flip or rotate a video permanently which takes quite a bit of time to re-encode the new AVI video file. If you want to flip and watch the video that is upside down without spending time in re-encoding, you can use VLC Media Player to do that instantly. VLC Media Player is one of the most popular and powerful free media player that can support a lot of video and audio formats without installing codecs because it is built-it to the player.

To flip/rotate and watch the video instantly using VLC Media Player, first you load the video file as normal. You can either drag and drop the video file to VLC Media Player, or press Ctrl+O or go to Media > Open File. Then click on the Tools at menu bar and select Effects and Filters. Go to View Effects tab and at the Basic tab, check to enable the Transform feature.

You can either flip the video vertically/horizontally or rotate by 90/180/270 degrees. Click Close and then play the video again. You will see that the video is being played flipped or rotated instantly according to your choice. Definitely a time saver if you don’t need a permanently flipped or rotated video and VLC Media Player runs on Windows, Mac OS and Linux.

I just downloaded VLC Media Player 0.8.6f Janus (wxWidgets interface) to rotate a video file. I am running Windows 7. The instructions above do not work. There is no Tools choice on the menu. Now what do I do?
