Most people prefers to use Microsoft Office even though it cost money and there are free alternative such as OpenOffice. Every few years Microsoft would come up with a new version of Office trying to convince everyone to upgrade. When a lot of people have upgraded to the latest version of Office, those that doesn’t have the funds to upgrade will be stuck in using the older version. This doesn’t seem to be a problem because they can still continue using Word, Excel, Outlook and etc…
The problem appears when those using Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010 created a Word document and sent it to Office 2003 or XP users. Ever since Office 2007, they have a new file extension for their word document which is .docx, where the old version is just .doc. New office 2007 and 2010 have no problems in opening the old .doc file but then the old office such as 2003 and XP won’t be able to open the .docx file. It is just not backwards compatible.
Microsoft has published a compatibility pack which will concert the .docx format in to a compatible format and let you read documents in Office 97 – 2003 but if you’re on a computer that doesn’t allow you to install stuff, you can try this free online docx to doc conversion service.
You will need to visit this website, browse for the .docx that you cannot open and click the Convert button. The file will be uploaded to the server for conversion and once it’s done, you will have a link to download the the converted .docx file. However, the conversion process may vary depending upon such factors as: the size of the file and the number of other conversions in queue. For an average size file, the conversion should be completed in just a few minutes.
