Filter Open and Save File Type with Formats Customizer

March 18, 2010 | Filed under Software

When you want to open, save, import or export a file from a folder containing a lot of files, you could waste some time in search for the particular file that you want. By default these programs shows all format that it supports and you can narrow down the search by selecting for file type that you want to load. One example is in Microsoft Paint. If you go to try to open a file, by default it loads all supported picture files and shows it on the window. Other non supported file types such as EXE, DLL and etc won’t be loaded. You can click on the All Picture Files drop down and select the format such as PNG which will only display PNG files on the window.

Problem is some powerful software such as Adobe Photoshop supports a huge amount of image formats and you might also have to waste time in search for the format type that you want to filter. If you know for a fact that you only manage a few file types, it would be better that you filter out those file types you probably will never touch. The file type list becomes shorter and you work faster as well.

You can use the freeware Formats Customizer to remove document types that are not used from application file dialogs for the commands. It acts like a hook where it means be running in background for the filtering to work or else it won’t. Fortunately Formats Customizer doesn’t take much memory, only 1.5MB during our test. Formats Customizer is easy to use. There are two panes and the input document types if for open and output is for save. Simply select the file types that you don’t want to show in the program and then click OK.
