Windows Vista and 7 support themes to change themes where with a single click it changes the desktop background, window color, sounds and screen saver all at once. By default Microsoft only allows official themes to be installed and untrusted 3rd party visual style cannot be installed. To use 3rd party themes, you will need to patch 3 system dll files which is themeservice.dll, themeui.dll and uxtheme.dll. There are patches that is able to automate the patching of the files to allow usage of other themes but you should check out Windows Themes Installer.
Windows Themes Installer is a freeware portable utility which allows you to install a theme, remove a theme and restore defaults easily in Windows 7 & Vista. The latest version is able to automatically patch the system files without the need of a 3rd party system file patcher.
With Windows Theme Installer, other than the automated patching, you can easily install custom theme, explorer.exe, oobefldr.dll, explorerframe.dll and Shell32.dll. Just select the checkbox and browse for the modified files and click Install theme. The installed theme will be then listed at the right pane and you can easily switch themes from there.
To restore back the modified patched system files, just click the Restore Default System Files. Be warned that you would need to understand about replacing of some of the Windows core files such as explorer.exe. Wrongly doing it will cause Windows to be unbootable.
