Vinyl and cassette tapes are the things in the past and now has been replaced by CD, DVD and even probably blu-ray. Many old school DJs that were using vinyl many years ago has also started to scratch on discs rather than vinyls. If you have many vinyls or cassette tapes, you can create a backup by recording them to MP3 on your computer. One of such software that can easily help you achieve that is LP Recorder.
LP Recorder is a shareware that normally cost $39.95. All you need to do to record vinyl is connect the tape or line output from your stereo to the line input of your soundcard, select the recording input, enter a filename and press the record button. For a time limited, you can download the full version of LP Recorder for free and this promo expires on 11 June 2010.
Do note that when you try to run LRSetup.exe in Windows 7, you will get the error “Version 10.0 LP Recorder or later is required for Windows 7” This can easily be bypassed by right clicking on LRSetup.exe file, select Properties, go to Compatibility tab and check “Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 3)”.
Unix has a philosophy of using one tool for only one job. Unlike Windows where people prefer to make all in one application that can do multiple things together. If not carefully coded, the program will end up unstable causing crashes and unwanted problems. Although many media players such as Windows Media Player, Winamp, foobar and etc has its own playlist manager, here a free application that is just meant to create playlist.
Playlist Creator enables you to create playlists of your precious music within seconds. The composition and creation of a playlist is quite intuitive: Add all desired files, enter a name for the playlist and select its save location. Hit the create button and one moment later your brand-new playlist is ready. You don’t have to recreate your playlist every time you want to make changes to it. Just open the existing playlist file, make the changes you want and save the playlist. It’s as simple as that!
Playlist Creator also supports combining or merging multiple playlist that you had before with the new one by clicking the third icon at the right hand side which says Add Playlist. There is also file type filters where you can set Playlist Creator to add or not to add to the playlist. If you find that the list being ordered in alphabetical is too boring, you can set it to shuffle the playlist items.

A PC user that listens to mp3 on computer has an average of at least a few hundreds of songs. Music lovers normally searches for lyrics which can be found for free on many lyrics websites. If you are only looking for the lyrics on a few songs, then it wouldn’t be a problem but if you would like to sing every song that is being played on your computer, then it will be a tedious task to search for the lyrics.
If you are using Windows Media Player or Winamp to play MP3, then you can install a small Lyrics Plugin which auto searches and displays the lyrics for the song that is played.
Lyrics Plugin is just superb. We have tested it and the lyrics appeared instantly when I click the play button for a MP3. There is also no configuration at all that you need to touch. The only con is you will need an active internet connection to download the lyrics and it does not have the ability to cache or save the lyrics. It searches for lyrics based on the ID3 tags and if it is empty, lyrics are not displayed and you can add it to the list by clicking the Configure link.
One of the best thing in MP3 other than having a good quality with a small size, it can have album art embedded to it. The reason why you would want to have an album art added to the MP3 file is so that it looks nicer when you are playing it on your portable mp3 player such as iPod, Zune, Zen and etc. If the MP3 does not have an album art, you will have an ugly icon that says “no album art available”.
One of the easy way to add or embed album covers into MP3 is by using Mp3tag. Mp3tag is a powerful and yet easy-to-use tool to edit metadata of common audio formats where it supports ID3v1, ID3v2.3, ID3v2.4, iTunes MP4, WMA, Vorbis Comments and APE Tags.
Before you start using Mp3tag, you can search for the album art cover from Albumart.org, download and save it to your computer. Then launch Mp3tag, click on File, select Add directory and browse the location where your MP3 is. Once all the MP3s are loaded, you can select multiple MP3 on the list, right click on it and select Extended Tags. On the right box where it says Cover, click the top icon with the star to browse the album cover. Click OK when done and the album art cover is saved to the MP3 files.
We love to use a sound editing software by Nero called Nero WaveEditor because it is easy to use but unfortunately it is not free and it only comes with the full version of Nero Burning ROM. Purchasing the full suite of Nero just to use the WaveEditor is not worth it, so here is an alternative that works nearly and even looks nearly the same as Nero WaveEditor and it is also called Wave Editor.
Wave Editor is a fast and easy digital audio editing software for Windows. It provides powerful and user-friendly editing environment which suits beginners especially and perform basic editing capabilities like: cut, copy, paste and delete parts of recording. Unlike the other sound editors based on the same ActiveX engine, Wave Editor developed from the ground up to be easy in use and fast. The user interface was designed with speed, accuracy and ease of use in mind. Key feature of Wave Editor is and simple selection of audio blocks during playback.
Wave Editor is able to only support 3 common types of audio formats which is MP3, WMA and WAVE. After loaded the audio file, a wave form will appear on screen with 2 bars which means the left and right channel. You can then cut, copy, paste, delete, insert silent, normalize, fade in, fade out and save selected fragment with unlimited undo and redo.
With this Wave Editor, you can cut a short part of a MP3 to be used as your mobile’s ringtone. Another solution to cut your MP3 for ringtone without using any software is by uploading to mp3cut.com.
When Windows 7 was in Beta, it has been discovered that Windows 7 Media Player and Windows Media Center will block the usage of third party video codecs. Fortunately later Microsoft has confirmed that the final release of Windows 7 does not restrict the use of third-party codecs. However if you try to install K-Lite Codec Pack, you will notice that the third party drivers are not being used and the only way to change it is by editing the registry.
Fortunately there is a free utility called Win7DSFilterTweaker developed by CodecGuide which allows you to configure your preferred DirectShow decoders with just a few mouse clicks. It is quick, easy, and changes can always be undone. If you for example prefer to use ffdshow or CoreAVC for decoding H.264 video then you can do so by using this tool. This tool is particularly useful for the Microsoft players, namely Windows Media Player and Media Center. Certain advanced third party players, such as Media Player Classic, are already capable of using third party filters without using this tool.
The changes made by Win7DSFilterTweaker is permanent and takes effect immediately without reboot. To restore back the original Microsoft codecs, you will have to run Win7DSFilterTweaker again, and select Microsoft from the list.
